Ways to Keep Your Aging Parents Active and Engaged

As your senior parents age, it’s more important than ever to keep them both physically and mentally active. Here are 5 activities that you can encourage them to partake in so that they can stay physically active and mentally stimulated:

1. Encourage Physical Activity:
Encourage your parents to stay physically active. Activities such as taking walks, gardening, or doing light exercise are ways they can get moving without causing too much strain on the body.

2. Socializing:
Help your parents stay socially connected by arranging visits with friends and family, joining clubs and organizations, or volunteering. While they may be resistant to moving into a senior living facility, one of the amazing benefits is the increased ability to socialize.

3. Hobbies and Interests:
Encourage your parents to take up a new hobby or rekindle an old interest. Engaging in old or new hobbies can also often accomplish the goals of socializing and engaging in physical activity!

4. Technology:
Help your parents stay connected with technology by teaching them how to use social media, video chat, or other communication tools. Step-by-step instructions can be a really great reference for them to continue using the technology even when you’re not around.

5. Mental Stimulation:
Engage your parents in mentally stimulating activities such as reading, crossword puzzles, or learning a new language or skill. You can also make it a group activity with the family by playing a board game or doing a puzzle together.

Encouraging your parents to stay physically and mentally active is an important first step in keeping them engaged as they age. You may reach a point, though, where downsizing is the right next step.
